A long time ago, in 2006, I had a class at SVA on illustration for the stage. My final project for the class was a set of costumes for a play of my choice. I decided to illustrate costumes for 'Queen Margot: A Play in Five Acts' by Alexandre Dumas. I had recently read a biography of Catherine de Medici, and I really wanted illustrate something having to do with that historical period. This is the costume for the character Madame de Sauve. She is based on a real baroness, Charlotte de Beaune Semblançay, who was a member of Catherine de Medici's notorious "Flying Squadron", a group of beautiful female spies and informants recruited to seduce important men at the French Court.
